UnrealBots in EVO* 2010 (EVOGames)


Here you are the AMAZING (:D) poster presented at EVO* 2010, inside the Workshop EVOGames.

The work describes the analysis, design and implementation of two evolutionary algorithms (a Genetic Algorithm  and a Genetic Programming one) to improve the default Artificial Intelligence of the Bots (authonomous enemies) inside the PC Game Unreal.

It had plenty of visits and millards of interest people ask me about the topics in it…

… well, to be honest just, 10 people ask me (3 of them are friends of mine), but in some moments, around 8 or 10 people were looking at the poster and making jokes with me, since it seems to be a perfect mixture between a fabulous research study (:D) and a funny PC game.😉

Project presentation at the IT Projects Day

Tomorrow lots of people in suits will be heading to Boadilla del Monte, in Madrid, to present their projects in a seminar in which project principal investigators will be talking about them. I am still thinking about the suit, but will be there to present this summary of our groups’ work. It’s been two quite productive years (and a half), but we have only twenty minutes to present them using this slide deck

Feel free to ask about or request any paper you see mentioned there. Most refer to ongoing research, anyways.

PhD thesis defense: “Modelling and simulation of laser dynamics with cellular automata on parallel and distributed computers”

On December 14, 2009, the NoHNES Project member JosĂ© Luis Guisado Lizar successfully defended his PhD thesis, with the “Doctor Europaeus” mention, at the  Condensed Matter Physics Department of the Universidad de Sevilla. The thesis advisors were Dr. Francisco JimĂ©nez Morales, from the Universidad de Sevilla, and Dr. Francisco FernĂĄndez de Vega, from the Universidad de Extremadura.

The thesis Committee was comprised of Dr. Antonio Córdoba Zurita (Universidad de Sevilla), Dr. Marco Tomassini (Université de Lausanne, Suiza), Dr. Alfons Hoekstra (Universiteit van Amsterdam, Holanda), Dr. Juan Juliån Merelo Guervós (Universidad de Granada) and Dr. Fernando Díaz del Río (Universidad de Sevilla).

The thesis introduces a new model for laser dynamics based on a bio-inspired cellular automata algorithm, and also analyses how to implement it efficiently on parallel and distributed computers.

Abstract: This thesis presents interdisciplinary research carried out in the areas of physics and computer science. We introduce a new model based on cellular automata (CA) to describe laser dynamics, which is an alternative to the standard description based on differential equations. We also study how to take advantage of the intrinsic parallel nature of CA to carry out high performance computational simulations with that model on parallel and distributed computers.

CA are a class of fully discrete, spatially-distributed dynamical systems characterized by local interaction and synchronous parallel dynamical evolution. Our CA-based model reproduces the main laser dynamics phenomenology. It reinforces the vision of laser as a complex system, since the macroscopic properties of the laser system emerge with this model as a cooperative phenomenon from elementary components that interact locally under simple rules. This model represents a new methodological approach for laser modelling, which can be advantageous in cases in which the differential equations are difficult or impossible to integrate, or not entirely applicable because the usual approximations are not valid. It also opens the door to new more detailed CA-based models that could capture more features of laser behaviour.

We investigate how to parallelize the model efficiently. A parallel implementation has been developed using the message passing paradigm. Its performance and scalability have been analysed for the two most usual kinds of platforms for this kind of applications: dedicated clusters, and heterogeneous non-dedicated clusters including a dynamic load balancing strategy. In the latter case a very flexible modular approach has been employed in which the model is executed on top of a dynamic load balancing tool. The results confirm that, in spite of potential difficulties, it is feasible to execute large, fine-grained simulations with CA-based models—including the laser model described—on the most usual types of cluster computing platforms with a good efficiency and scalability.

JICAN 2009 – Workshop on Computational Intelligence Applied to Business and Industry

On November 5 and 6 the Instituto Tecnologico de Informatica, Universidad Politecnica de Valencia, Spain organises JICAN 2009, the Workshop on Computational Intelligence Applied to Business.

This is a unique 2-day workshop exclusively devoted to real-world applications of CI, with the support of the Spanish Chapter of IEEE-Computational Intelligence Society.

The purpose of the workshop is twofold: on the one hand, to introduce this technology to companies in any area; on the other, to show actual fields of application to researchers in academia.
We are privileged to count on the participation of world leading experts in Computational Intelligence, who will present the latest developments in CI with a special focus on how it is used in real world business and industry applications (specifically in videogames, logistics, social networks, planning and scheduling…)..

The workshop is aimed at:

  • Companies: Project managers or directors (technical and non technical) who, as part of their work, face complex problems related to optimisation, prediction and decision making.
  • Academia: Researchers and students interested in the practical application of Computational Intelligence.

The languages of the Workshop are English and Spanish. Two-way simultaneous translation will be provided to those who require it.
